Should I use AI to write my CV?

AI has changed the way we complete everyday tasks, so why not use it to help with writing a CV? When you’re applying to a range of different fields, writing a number of CVs can be time-consuming, tedious and seem like a chore.

So should you use AI to write your CV?

AI and CV writing

AI has helped solve a number of day-to-day problems, from answering questions to responding to emails. It can also help you write a comprehensive CV. In fact, in many ways, AI can seem like a cheat code for writing a CV. It cuts down on the time spent drafting the text in your CV, meaning that you don’t have to think of the right words yourself and it can even help you position yourself in the most professional tone of voice possible. It removes the difficult parts of CV writing and leaves you with a readable and polished application.

But what are the downsides of using AI in this way?

The Dangers of Using AI to Write Your CV

A Lack of Uniqueness

Many AI platforms compile data from the internet in order to form an answer for the user. In the context of writing a CV, this means an AI bot will rephrase or take from another CV to create one for the user. As a result, no new information is on the CV, and you are instead left with a cookie-cutter CV which is not personalised to you as an individual. This is an issue as recruiters generally will be able to notice an AI-generated CV due to the derivative look and will in general discard these CVs. Recruiters want to know about you as a person: your skills, your experience, your aspirations. AI will never be able to capture you and what makes you great.

Generalised CVs

Additionally, AI is trying to create the most generalised CV in order to fit any unspecified needs for the user. As this is the case, the CVs produced are not specifically made for job descriptions; they are trying to make the broadest document possible. Once again, if you choose to use AI, you are only harming your application as your CV appears unspecific and does not meet the needs of the specific company and job description.

Detectability

The ethics of using AI for any work are complicated at best. As AI platforms use the works of unaware internet users to provide a service for their users, it could be seen as irresponsible or immoral to promote this in general.

Additionally, as many recruiters now have software to detect AI, when using these tools to write a CV, it comes with a risk that you will be detected. Recruiters generally look down on AI. By using AI to write your CV, you are not showing your skills but instead the skills of technology. It is not the tech that is being hired, but you. CVs are a tool for companies to get to know you and to understand why you’d be a good fit for them and AI is not made for personalisation. So, by using AI you are not portraying yourself in the best light and your CV is likely to be detected as being written by AI.

Bottomline: Should You Use AI when writing your CV?

While AI might seem like a simple solution to the tedious task of writing a CV, it comes with many risks and the end result is often not what recruiters are looking for. But don’t worry -  there are many options out there if you are struggling to write or edit your CV.
